Permuter

History happened once. Permuter takes your real market data and manufactures thousands of alternative versions of it — same volatility clustering, same regime structure, same statistical fingerprint, completely different path. Build your strategy on those and keep your real history untouched as a genuine out-of-sample test. Or run a finished system across them and find out whether the edge was ever real.

Fifty synthetic GBPUSD histories generated by Permuter, fanning out beneath the real price line

Fifty alternative histories generated from one GBPUSD M1 file. The white line is what actually happened.

The Problem With Your Backtest

History happened once. Your strategy was developed against that one sequence of bars, and every parameter you tuned was tuned to it — including the accidents. The 2024 range that happened to suit your stop distance. The gap that happened to land the right side of your entry. None of it will repeat.

This is why so many strategies look immaculate on historical data and die within weeks of going live. Not because the trader did anything obviously wrong, but because a single backtest is a sample size of one, and no amount of optimising a sample of one tells you whether the result was skill or coincidence.

Walk-forward analysis helps. Out-of-sample testing helps. But both are still carving up the same single history — and once you've looked at your out-of-sample data a few times, it isn't out-of-sample any more.

Permuter attacks the problem directly. It takes your real market data and manufactures alternative versions of it — histories that keep the asset's statistical personality but destroy the specific path your strategy memorised. Run your system across those. Survive them, and you have something real. Die on them, and you found out for the price of a tool instead of the price of an account.

And it works in the other direction too, which is the part most people miss. You can develop the strategy on synthetic data from the start — every idea, every parameter sweep, every failed experiment run against histories that never happened. Your real history stays sealed. When you finally test on it, that test is genuinely out-of-sample, because the strategy has never seen a single bar of it. You only get one first look at real data. This is how you keep it.

What People Use It For

Permuter generates data. What that unlocks depends on where you are in your process.

Develop before you spend your real data

Build and optimise the entire strategy on synthetic histories. Burn as many iterations as you like — there's an endless supply. Your real history stays untouched, so the day you finally run it there, you get a clean out-of-sample result instead of a number you've already contaminated by looking.

Prove an existing edge isn't luck

You have a strategy with a good-looking equity curve. Run it across hundreds of alternative histories and look at the distribution of outcomes rather than the single number your backtest gave you. A real edge shows up across the spread. A fitted one falls apart.

Catch curve-fitting outright

Shuffle mode destroys the market's temporal structure while keeping its return distribution. If your strategy still turns a profit on data where the patterns have been deliberately dismantled, it was never reading patterns — and you've found that out in an afternoon.

Get more data than the market ever made

There is a finite amount of GBPUSD history and you cannot buy more. Machine learning models, large parameter sweeps and anything data-hungry run out of road quickly. Permuter produces as much statistically faithful data as you have patience and disk space for.

Build hybrid real-and-synthetic datasets

Slice your history and permute only the bands you choose — the rest stays bit-for-bit real. One file holding both genuine market history and history that never happened, on a single continuous timeline. Nothing else does this, and it is the feature people come back for.

Stress-test across regimes

Chained export stitches alternating real-derived and synthetic blocks into one continuous series, so a strategy runs repeatedly in and out of unfamiliar territory across a single file. Far harsher than any one permutation run, and much closer to what live trading actually does to a system.

Check parameter robustness

Run the same configuration across many permutations and watch how tightly the results cluster. A parameter set that only works on one specific history will scatter. One that holds its shape across all of them is worth trusting with money.

Two Modes — One to Disprove, One to Prove

Most tools of this kind do one of these. Permuter does both, because a strategy you have only tried to confirm has not really been tested at all.

Shuffle — the disproof

This mode exists to kill your strategy. Destructive permutation dismantles the market's temporal patterns while preserving its return distribution, leaving data where there is genuinely nothing left to find. If your system still turns a profit on that, it was never reading the market — it was reading your optimiser. Nothing else tells you that so quickly, or so bluntly.

Synthesise — the proof

This mode exists to build and confirm. Plausible alternative histories generated with HMM, GARCH and fBM models calibrated on your own data, each block preserving the asset's regime structure, volatility clustering and trending tendency. Develop on these, or run a finished system across hundreds of them, and what holds up across the spread is an edge worth funding.

Used together they close the loop. Synthesise tells you the strategy works across markets that could plausibly have existed. Shuffle tells you it stops working when the structure is taken away — which is exactly what you want to see, because a system that profits on both is profiting on something that isn't there.

Hybrid Datasets — Real and Alternative in One File

This is the part of Permuter you will not find anywhere else, and it's the reason the tool exists in the shape it does.

Most permutation tools operate on the whole file. You get a synthetic dataset or you get your real one. Permuter instead lets you define exactly which bars get touched — and every bar outside your selection stays bit-for-bit identical to source. Not resampled, not smoothed, not approximated. Identical.

What comes out is a single file containing both: stretches of genuine market history sitting alongside stretches that never happened, on one continuous timeline your platform reads as an ordinary symbol. Three ways to draw that line:

Window

Drag a start and end percentage across the dataset. One contiguous region permuted, the rest untouched — giving you real in-sample and synthetic out-of-sample in the same file, with the join seamless.

Fraction

Permute a defined fraction of the data — anywhere from one half down to one twentieth — anchored to the start or the end of your history, depending on which end you want to keep clean.

Alternating

Slice the history into equal bands and permute every second one, from two slices up to twenty. Odd, even, or both — interleaving real and alternative history repeatedly across the whole span rather than splitting it once.

Alternating mode with Both selected — odd slices in orange, even slices in blue, permuted independently of one another.

Chained Export — Cover the Entire History

Slicing has an obvious limitation. If you permute the odd bands, the even bands are still your real, already-seen history — and half your timeline goes untested.

Chaining solves it. Select Both, and Permuter produces two complementary realisations from the same seed: one with the odd slices permuted, one with the even. Chained export then stitches the alternating chunks together into a single continuous series. Every region of your history appears in permuted form somewhere in that file — nothing is skipped, nothing is left as the version your strategy has already memorised.

The result is one long dataset that moves repeatedly in and out of unfamiliar territory, across the full span of your data, while preserving the asset's statistical character throughout. For training a model or stress-testing a system across regimes, that is a substantially harder and more honest test than any single permutation run — and considerably closer to what live markets do to a strategy.

Six Methods, Not One Shuffle

Different questions need different mathematics. Permuter gives you six — three that destroy structure and three that rebuild it — each with a plain-English label so you know what you’re choosing.

Permutation Methods — Destroy Mode

Return Permutation

The rigorous default. Bar-to-bar returns are permuted and the series rebuilt, preserving the exact return distribution while destroying sequence.

Masters MCP

Independent shuffling of each log-price component, following the Monte Carlo permutation approach set out in the quantitative literature.

Block Bootstrap

Resampling in contiguous blocks with a configurable block size, preserving local autocorrelation that a plain shuffle would erase.

Synthetic Models — Prove Mode

These do not destroy structure, they rebuild it. Each model is calibrated on your own data, and you can run a single model throughout, rotate through all three across regions, or have one picked at random per region.

fBM (Hurst-Preserving)

Fractional Brownian motion with the Hurst exponent estimated from your data or set manually — preserving the long-memory character of the series.

GARCH(1,1) Bootstrap

Volatility clustering reproduced from a GARCH(1,1) fit on your data — quiet stretches stay quiet and violent stretches cluster, the way real markets behave.

HMM (Regime-Switching)

A hidden Markov model calibrated on your series, switching between the regimes it finds — so the synthetic history changes character the way the real one does.

See It Before You Commit

Permuter is not a black box that hands you a file and asks you to trust it. Every configuration can be previewed on a full charting engine first — pan, zoom, crosshair, drawing tools, full-screen. Overlay as many permutations as you like against the real series and look at what you've actually built before a single byte is exported.

Every parameter is exposed and explained in the interface itself. Every run is seeded, so any result you get is reproducible exactly.

Who It's For

Systematic traders

You have a strategy with a good-looking equity curve and you want to know whether it's real before you fund it.

EA developers

You need out-of-sample data that isn't exhausted, and more of it than the market has ever produced.

Researchers and students

You want a Monte Carlo permutation workbench with a real interface, rather than assembling one from scratch in Python.

Anyone with an OHLC CSV

Permuter doesn't care what platform your data came from or what produced your trades. If it's bars, it works.

Try It First

There is no refund policy, because there doesn't need to be one — you get the software before you pay for it, and you decide from there.

The free trial runs for 7 days and every feature is fully unlocked: both modes, all six methods, every permutation window, the full charting preview, and export. The single limitation is data volume — during the trial, each file you load is trimmed to a 30-day window that you choose yourself. Enough to evaluate the tool properly on your own data. Not enough to do a full validation run.

When you buy, you receive a licence file by email — permuter.lic. Install it and the limit is gone permanently.

INSTALLING YOUR LICENCE

If your trial has already expired: Permuter shows a dialog on launch. Click I Have a Licence, point it at the permuter.lic file from your email, and you are done.

If you are still inside your trial: save permuter.lic into the folder %APPDATA%\Permuter, then restart Permuter. To get there, press Win + R, paste %APPDATA%\Permuter and hit Enter. The title bar will stop saying TRIAL once the licence is picked up.

Questions

Does it need MetaTrader?

No. Permuter is a standalone Windows application. It reads and writes CSV files, so it works alongside MT4, MT5, Python, or anything else that can produce OHLC bars.

What data can it handle?

Any OHLC CSV. The screenshots on this page were produced from a GBPUSD M1 file of roughly 686,000 bars — around 46 MB — handled comfortably.

Can I mix real and synthetic data in one file?

Yes — that's the feature Permuter was built around. You choose which bands of the timeline get permuted and everything else stays bit-for-bit identical to your source. Chain the odd and even realisations together and every region of your history is covered.

Is it a subscription?

No. One payment, permanent licence. It will not stop working, expire, or ask you for money again.

Why isn't this on the MQL5 Marketplace?

The marketplace hosts MT4 and MT5 products only. Permuter is a Windows desktop application and isn't eligible, so it's sold directly here.

Will it tell me if my strategy is profitable?

No — and be wary of anything that claims it will. Permuter generates data. What you run against that data, and what you conclude, is entirely yours.

How many machines?

Your licence is issued to your email address and is intended for your own use across your own machines.

Important Notices

Synthetic data is not real data. Permuter generates artificial and permuted price series for research and validation purposes. These series did not occur. Results obtained on synthetic data do not predict, guarantee, or imply any future market outcome.

No financial advice. Permuter is a software tool. It does not place trades, issue signals, recommend instruments, or provide financial, investment, or tax advice. Cave and Fire Group Pty Ltd is a software development company and is not a licensed financial services provider.

Validation is not a guarantee. A strategy that performs well across permuted and synthetic histories may still lose money in live trading. Statistical validation reduces the risk of deploying a curve-fitted system; it does not eliminate the risk of trading.
